Volkswagen to launch first electric car in India next year: Details

Alongside showcasing the new variants and colour options of Taigun and Virtus, Volkswagen also unveiled the India-spec ID.4 GTX all-electric vehicle at its annual brand conference. The German car brand has indicated that the new ID.4 GTX will hit the market in late 2023. The all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 GTX SUV has already been spied on several times on trial runs on Indian roads in production-ready guise.

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX made its Indian debut for the first time at Auto Expo 2020. However, the all-electric SUV has only been confirmed now for an official launch in the country. With its arrival, the new ID.4 GTX, which is based on Volkswagen’s MEB born-electric platform, will be Volkswagen’s first all-electric offering for the Indian car market.

Featuring a sleek and futuristic design, the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX comes with an array of modern features, like all-LED headlamps and tail lamps and GTX badging on the closed front grille, side front fenders and boot lid. Having a smooth and aerodynamic design, the new ID.4 GTX comes with 20-inch alloy wheels and an LED connecting light bar between the tail lamps. On the inside, the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX has a futuristic-looking cabin, comprising a full-TFT instrument console, a panoramic sunroof, a large touchscreen infotainment system and powered front seats and steering wheel.

Globally, the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is available with a dual-motor setup in its range-topping version, which is the same variant expected to hit the Indian shores as well. This dual-motor setup claims a maximum power output of 300 PS and a peak torque output of 310 Nm. It also comes with a 77kWh lithium-ion battery, which claims a maximum driving range of 479 km. Volkswagen also claims that the new ID.4 GTX is capable of hitting the 100 kmph mark from a standstill in 6 seconds.

The new ID.4 GTX is touted to be a significant model for Volkswagen’s all-electric plans for the future in India. With this new electric SUV, Volkswagen will be charting out the new journey of electrification in India. However, the German marquee will have its key focus on petrol-powered vehicles. By 2030, Volkswagen intends to have 20 per cent of its sales coming from all-electric models, with the remaining 70-80 per cent coming in from petrol-powered vehicles.

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX will be sold in batches with limited numbers through the CBU route, just like how it did with niche offerings like T-Roc, Polo GTI and Beetle in the past. Volkswagen is expected to price the new ID.4 GTX in the range of Rs 55-65 lakh, which will make it a direct competitor to other all-electric midsize offerings like the Volvo XC40 Recharge and Kia EV6.
