Volvo’s new EX30 Compact Electric SUV is under $35K

Volvo has finally announced its cheapest EV yet, the EX30. This is an electric compact SUV, think a Chevy Bolt or Trax equivalent. It’s also one of the more affordable models on the market so far, with a starting price of $34,950. This is just the beginning of the race to the bottom for EVs.

So what does the EX30 offer? Well, it does come in a Single Motor Extended Range or Twin Motor Performance variant. It does have a 64kWh usable battery inside, which Volvo says you can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 27 minutes. Range is expected to be around 275 miles, while the Twin Motor Performance variant shaves 10 miles off of that range.

The Volvo EX30 isn’t slow either, with a 0 to 60 clocking in at just 5.1 seconds.

Volvo’s smallest SUV ever

This is Volvo’s smallest SUV ever, but it doesn’t mean that Volvo skimped on anything. It has a soundbar in the front from Harman Kardon, which saves space compared to using six speakers. It also has all of the safety features that you’d expect from Volvo. This also includes the updated Park Pilot Assist, which is going to help you find parking spaces, and help you get into them.

The EX30 uses around 30% less steel and aluminum compared to its other SUVs. That’s partly due to the fact that it is the smallest SUV they’ve ever put out. But that does help Volvo be more environmentally conscious.

Of course, it still runs with Google Built-in, formerly Android Automotive. So that means the entire infotainment system runs off of Android. What makes this so great, is having apps like Google Maps that can read your state of charge. So it can put in charging stops on your route, as well as telling you what your state of charge will be when you get to your destination.

Pre-orders are now open for the Volvo EX30. It starts at $34,950 and there will be a cross-country variant coming next year. Volvo says that it is also planning to launch the EX90 soon, which will be “under $80,000.”
