The 2024 Oscars are something of a homecoming for Becky G. The event, being hosted at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, isn’t too far from where she was born and raised in Inglewood, California. The Mexican-American singer and songwriter celebrated her home and heritage with a heated performance of “The Fire Inside” from the film Flamin’ Hot. She delivered the track in front of blazing flames with help from a choir of Latino children.

“The Fire Inside” is nominated for Best Original Song at this year’s ceremony. “This film, this team, this song represents something close to my heart,” Becky said when the nomination was first revealed. “It is my heart. This is literally one of my dreams coming true in front of the world, so I just wanted to share that with you guys and and say thank you. Thank you.”

Written by Diane Warren and performed by Becky G, “The Fire Inside” is nominated against American Symphony’s “It Never Went Away,” Killers of the Flower Moon’s “Wahzhazhe,” along with two Barbie hits “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”

Flamin’ Hot follows the inspiring success story of Richard Montañez. While working as a janitor at Frito Lay, Montañez played a crucial role in transforming Flamin’ Hot Cheetos from an option on the chip shelf into a pop culture phenomenon.

Becky G’s Mexican-American heritage has been integrated into the core of her musical being more and more as she develops her artistry. For 20 minutes of her 2023 Coachella set, she welcomed guest appearances from artists in the regional Mexican space, including Peso Pluma, JOP, and Marca MP.

“To dedicate a whole 20 minutes in my set to just that, it’s because our music and our culture is something that I am so inspired by,” Becky G told Rolling Stone ahead of the performance. “Maybe it hasn’t been represented in my music in the past, but it is in the way that I work and in the way that I share, whether it be opportunities, songs, or just all those collaborative efforts, I think it really does come from the blood that runs through my veins.”
