What to Expect in 2026

0 26

2023 was an interesting year for Maruti Suzuki in India. The brand launched their much-awaited product, the Jimny five-door, along with other models like Fronx and Invicto. We now have some reports that suggest that Maruti is currently planning to bring in a new MPV to the market. The upcoming MPV will be based on the Suzuki Spacia, which is available in international markets. The MPV is currently under development and is codenamed YDB.

Suzuki Spacia

According to reports from ACI, the upcoming MPV from Maruti based on Spacia is expected to be launched in 2026. The Spacia sold in the Japanese market has a very practical boxy design. This is expected to change when it comes to India, as many may not like this design here. The India-spec version of the Spacia-based MPV will also be stretched to make more room for occupants. The Spacia sold in Japan is 3,395 mm, and Maruti Suzuki’s India-bound version of the MPV is expected to be longer than this, but the length would be kept under 4 meters.

Another feature that Spacia offers is sliding doors for rear passengers. This is expected to be replaced with regular doors in the Indian version. The overall design of the upcoming MPV is expected to remain boxy but with design changes to make it more appealing to Indian customers. As Maruti is planning to stretch the car, it is expected to come with three-row seating. The only MPV that measures under 4 meters in the Indian market currently is the Renault Triber. The upcoming MPV from Maruti will directly compete with the Triber in the segment.

While the international version comes with a variety of features, some of these like the ottoman seats are unlikely to come to India. The upcoming MPV codenamed YDB is going to be an affordable 7-seater MPV that will be positioned below Maruti Ertiga. However, unlike Ertiga, it would be a premium product and would be sold via Nexa dealerships. Ertiga is currently one of the most popular MPVs in the Indian market. It is popular among buyers from both the commercial and private sectors. Maruti even sells a premium MPV based on Ertiga, which is known as XL6. The Suzuki Spacia sold in the Japanese market is a Kei car and is powered by a small 660-cc engine. However, things would change when it comes to India. The Indian version might be powered by the 1.2-liter Z-Series petrol engine, which will be introduced in the next-generation Swift. The upcoming YDB MPV from Maruti will also get both manual and AMT gearbox options. Maruti Suzuki might also launch a CNG version of this MPV in the market.
