“She did open with a beautiful intro on why she chose the song,” the singer’s rep said

Demi Lovato is clearing up any confusion as to why she decided to sing “Heart Attack” at an American Heart Association event.

After the singer headlined the AHA’s annual Go Red for Women Red Dress Collection concert in New York City, Lovato’s representative told Entertainment Weekly that she selected the track for her performance to highlight the “mind-heart connection.”

“It was a sensitive moment intended to champion the women in the room — the very reason why Demi was at the event,” a representative for Lovato told the outlet. “She did open with a beautiful intro on why she chose the song and addressed the room, talking about the mind and heart connection. It was actually a beautiful moment.”

An attendee confirmed to the outlet that the singer had explained her reasoning for the track before the song. Some users online also pointed to the fact that Lovato herself had a heart attack following her 2018 overdose. “I snapped,” she said in her Dancing with the Devil documentary. “I had three strokes, I had a heart attack. My doctors said that I had five to 10 more minutes [to live].”

Regardless of the apaprent pushback, Lovato celebrated supporting the charity on her Instagram. She called for women to “rock your red” on Friday to promote awareness for cardiovascular disease, “women’s greatest health risk.”

The performance for the AHA comes several months after she released her album Revampled, featuring rock versions of her songs, including “Heart Attack” and “Cool for the Summer.”

“I changed the melody a little bit in certain spots and then try to hit higher notes than the originals,” Lovato told Rolling Stone.
