Why Mick Jagger may be happy about Jerry Hall’s divorce

One person who may be relieved that media titan Rupert Murdoch is divorcing Jerry Hall is the former supermodel’s longtime ex, Mick Jagger.

The Rolling Stones frontman was reportedly left “seething” when Murdoch, then 85, and Hall, then 59, surprised many by becoming romantically involved and then marrying in 2016, according to the Daily Mail. It’s not clear if Jagger had a problem with Murdoch’s politics, as the Australian billionaire controls right-leaning media outlets, including Fox News and the British Sun tabloid, but The Daily Mail said Jagger didn’t like the idea of Murdoch becoming part of his extended family.

Jagger and Hall had four children together during their 22-year relationship, and those children, who are all now adults, attended Hall and Murdoch’s wedding and were expected to have a relationship with the media mogul because of their mother.

“This means that Rupert Murdoch is going to become a part of his extended family, and Mick has a real problem with that,” an insider said at the time, according to the Daily Mail.

News broke Wednesday via the New York Times, that Murdoch, 91, and Hall, 65, were divorcing after six years of marriage.

The New York Times report didn’t offer any reasons for the breakup. The report also didn’t say if either has filed divorce papers yet. Representatives for both Murdoch and Hall declined to comment when contacted by the New York Times.

The divorce signals the end of Murdoch’s fourth, and shortest, marriage. Hall and Jagger never officially married, but she filed for divorce when they broke up in 1999, arguing that a ceremony they had on Bali in 1990 qualified as a legal marriage. However, a UK court ruled that their marriage was not valid under the law in either England or Indonesia, the BBC said.

When Hall and Murdoch wed at a centuries-old mansion in central London in 2016 they represented two wildly disparate worlds, as the Washington Post said. Hall and Murdoch’s October-December union also sparked rampant tabloid fascination.

Murdoch declared himself to be “the luckiest and happiest man in the world” when he married Hall. According to the New York Times, the hard-driving businessman decided to happily devote more time to his new wife, leaving room for his four oldest children to assert themselves at the top of his empire’s hierarchy.

Shortly after the wedding, the Daily Mail said that “the couple couldn’t keep the smiles off their faces” at a New York City gala. At Murdoch’s 90th birthday party last year at Central Park’s upscale restaurant, Tavern on the Green, Hall appeared to dote on her husband, the New York Times added.

If Jagger objected to Hall’s marriage to Murdoch, it probably wasn’t his place to say much, considering that the rocker subjected her to endless womanizing during their relationship. They finally broke up after she discovered he had an affair with Brazilian model Luciana Gimenez, who gave birth to Jagger’s seventh child that year.

In a 2005 interview with the Evening Standard, the Texas-born Hall talked about Jagger’s serial cheating and how she kept forgiving him “to the point where it wasn’t very healthy at all.” She also confessed that she “still loved” Jagger, but that their relationship had been so “unhealthy,” it had left her “so depressed” and “unhappy.”
