Will Tata ever bring the Sumo back?
The Tata Sumo has always been a beloved vehicle in India, known for its ruggedness and reliability. Although the Sumo was discontinued after 25 years of production, there are rumors that Tata may bring back the iconic nameplate in the future. An artist rendering of a futuristic Tata Sumo has recently surfaced, giving fans a glimpse of what the MUV may look like if it makes a comeback.
The rendering shows a vehicle with a boxy design that’s heavily inspired by the Tata Harrier and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. The front-end looks sleek and modern, while the body of the vehicle takes after the Evoque. The rear of the vehicle is reminiscent of the Ford Endeavour, giving the Sumo a tough and sturdy look.
It’s important to note that this is just an imaginative rendering created by an artist, and there are currently no official plans to reintroduce the Tata Sumo. The Sumo was not an SUV – even though it had SUV-like looks and stance for its time. It was essentially a rugged people-carrier, and currently Tata has no similar vehicle in its line-up.

The role of the Sumo was usurped by the Toyota Qualis and later Chevrolet Tavera, both people-carriers. However, the SUV-looking people-carrier segment died towards 2020, and people carriers were mostly van-shaped – such as the highly popular Toyota Innova, Mahindra Xylo and Marazzo, Renault Lodgy and Chevrolet Enjoy. Toyota Innova is still going strong in India, but the rest have disappeared. There is no SUV-like people-carrier in India anymore other than the Mahindra Bolero.
The Sumo name comes from Sumant Moolgaokar, a former MD of Tata Motors. The name Sumo is the result of joining the first syllables of his first and last name.
Tata would be bringing back the Sierra SUV, however. A concept version of a Tata Sierra EV was showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo by the carmaker, to much excitement from fans. The Safari nameplate has already been revived in the 7-seat version of the Tata Harrier SUV.
Only time will tell if the Tata Sumo will make a comeback in the future, but for now, car enthusiasts can enjoy the imaginative rendering and look forward to other exciting releases from Tata Motors.
