Day 2 of the Auto Expo 2022 was a little calmer in comparison to the first day. Not a whole lot of automakers introduced new vehicles. However, the country’s largest PV manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) took the spotlight and introduced two of its long-awaited SUVs – the Fronx (YTB Baleno Cross) and the five-door Jimny. Other automakers that debuted a few new vehicles on the second day were the British automaker MG, Tata Motors, and the Japanese luxury carmaker Lexus.

Fronx

First and foremost Maruti Suzuki showcased the highly anticipated Fronx premium crossover SUV at the show on the second day. The Fronx after being in talks for a good few months finally broke cover and was exactly as expected. Maruti Suzuki displayed the baby Grand Vitara based on the Baleno hatchbacks HEARTECT platform.

The Fronx on the exterior is heavily inspired by the mid size Grand Vitara and on the inside looks almost identical to the Baleno. Its gets a unique aerodynamic design. In terms of powertrain it gets a turbo-petrol engine of 1.0 litre which was first offered with the now discontinued Baleno RS. This engine at 5,500 rpm, produces a maximum power of 100 PS and a maximum torque of 147.6 Nm. It also comes with the option a 1.2-liter K-Series engine, on the other hand, which has a maximum power output of 89.73 PS and a maximum torque output of 113 Nm.

Next up on the Maruti Suzuki launch roster was the Jimny five-door like the Fronx it was also in discussions for a long time and yesterday it made its first official public debut. The extremely capable lifestyle off-roader has been unveeiled to take the spotlight away from the Mahindra’s highly popular off-roader Thar.

Suzuki AllGrip Pro, the proprietary off-road system developed by Maruti Suzuki, comes standard equipment on the new Jimny five-door. The new AllGrip Pro features 4L, which is low-range transfer gear, 2H, and 4H four-wheel drive on-the-fly. The Jimny five door will be powered by a 1.5 litre four cylinder naturally aspirated K15C Dualjet engine from MSIL. This engine generates 134.2 Nm of maximum torque and 104.8 PS of maximum power when assisted by a mild hybrid system. Standard transmission options include a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed torque converter.

This Wagon R Flex-Fuel might have went under the radar of many people during the Auto Expo but it was certainly there. The prototype vehicle was first displayed in December 2022 at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Technology Exhibition. The model has been developed locally by Maruti engineers with assistance from the Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan. It can operate on petrol with an ethanol-petrol combination of 20% (E20) to 85% (E85).

To no one’s surprise, Tata Motors took the covers off of yet another edition of its SUV siblings the Harrier and Safari. The new and updated Red Edition models get the highly anticipated ADAS features along with a brand-new 10.25 inch infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster. As part of the update the new Red Edition SUVs also received all-new ‘Carnelian’ red seat upholstery with a quilted pattern, red leatherette grab handles, grey dashboard trim, and piano black accents on the steering wheel.

Like all the previous new editions the Red Edition models also did not get any mechanical alterations and will still come powered by the same diesel motor. The same 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel engine that generates a maximum of 170 Ps and 350 Nm of peak torque which is offered with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission option will be seen under the bonnet of both the Harrier and Safari.

LX 500d

At the 2023 Auto Expo, Lexus, the luxury division of the Japanese carmaker Toyota, introduced the new LX 500d just a day after Toyota’s debut of its top-of-the-line Land Cruiser LC300. There are just a few production slots reserved for India for the 500d version of the luxury SUV, which is headed to the country. According to the company, the initial batch of fourth generation units has already been sold out.

A 3.3L Twin Turbo V6 Diesel engine with 304 HP and 700 Nm of torque will power the Lexus LX 500d. A 10-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels is mated to it. Price of the 2023 Lexus LX 500d begins at Rs. 2.82 Crores (Ex-Showroom, India).

Continuing its streak of unveiling more alternative fueled vehicles the British motoring brand MG unveiled the luxury MPV Euniq 7 at the Auto Expo 2023.  The Euniq 7 was the first MPV in the world to employ a hydrogen-based fuel cell propulsion when it was globally unveiled in 2020. It is sold as the Maxus Mafi fuel cell van in overseas markets.

Although MG withheld information on specs, the Euniq 7’s hydrogen fuel cell engine in the international markets produces a maximum of 201 horsepower. The 6.4kg hydrogen cylinder for the Euniq 7 can be quickly refilled, and MG claims the MPV has a range of up to 605 kilometres.
