Tinder has released “Tinder’s Year in Swipe” report for 2022 in which it has highlighted how the dating trends changed in the past year. The report says that, just like travel and live events among other social activities saw a rebound, dating was back to normal but with different preferences by young singles (aged between 18-25 years).

“Millions of young adults who started their dating lives in lockdown, showed they were definitely out and ready to mingle IRL, and unlike previous generations, they were dating on their terms and were done playing games,” the report said. Here are the top trends that the report highlighted.

Rise of ‘situationship’: The Tinder report notes that young singles opted for “more than a hookup, but not quite a traditional relationship – the ‘situationship.’ The trend saw a 49% increase in members adding the new relationship intention to their profiles.

End of dinner dates: Tinder saw singles opting for “Coffee Dates” (26%), “Picnic” (15%) and “Stand Up” (10%) as opposed to dinner and drinks – suggesting a shift to “less traditional and more authentic ways to get to know one another.”

Sober dates on the rise: Over 25% of surveyed young singles on Tinder say that they drink less on dates compared with last year. About 72% of Tinder users have “don’t drink” or “only drink occasionally” on their profiles. The use of “beer” and “wine” emojis decreased by 40% and 25%, respectively.

Funny, Fresh and Forward: Tinder users looked for a sense of humour, someone who is clear about what they want and people with good hygiene. Furthermore, loyalty (79%), respect (78%) and open-mindedness (61%) trended over looks (56%).

Stances on social issues: Three-quarters (75%) singles were looking for a match who is respectful of or invested in social issues. “In fact, so many Indian Tinder members mentioned LGBTQIA+, the environment, mental health, Ukraine and feminism in their bios this year,” the report said.
