AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) is here to make games smoother
AMD has released a new Adrenalin Edition GPU driver. It carries version 24.1.1 and brings two big features, AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) and AMD Video Upscaling.
What is AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF)?
AMD Fluid Motion Frames is a frame-generation feature. It generates frames in games to increase the frame rates to offer a smoother gaming performance. According to the company, when coupled with AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2), AFMF increases the frame rates up to 97% on average in games at 1080p resolution, and up to 103% on average in games at 1440p resolution. AFMF is supported by AMD Radeon 700M, RX 6000, and RX 7000 series GPUs and works with any DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 game.
At this point, you might be wondering what’s the difference between AFMF and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3) because the latter also generates frames in games to increase the frame rates. Well, there are two main differences. First, FSR 3 works in only those games that support it, whereas, AFMF works in all games, even if the developer hasn’t implemented support for it in a game. Second, AFMF lacks the video upscaling capability that FSR 3 offers. Asus ROG Ally is going to get AFMF soon.
What is AMD Video Upscaling?
As the name suggests, AMD Video Upscaling upscales videos for improved sharpness and clarity. The feature works with any DirectX 11 application, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Windows Media Player, and supports up to 4K resolution.
