Apple blocks update to email app with ChatGPT tech, here’s why

0 44

Apple has reportedly delayed the approval of an update to an AI-powered email app. According to a report in WallStreetJournal, an update to the email app BlueMail was blocked last week. The report quotes Ben Volach, co-founder of BlueMail developer Blix Inc. BlueMail uses a customized version of OpenAI’s GPT-3 language model.

Blix co-founder slams Apple
Ben Volach, the co-founder of BlueMail developer Blix Inc does not agree with Apple. “Apple is making it really hard to bring innovation to our users,” Volach told WSJ. He further claimed that the request was unfair, as other apps with AI features aren’t subjected to the same rules.

Why Apple has restricted the update to the email app
Apple has reportedly delayed App Store approval for an update for BlueMail over concerns that it would potentially generate inappropriate content for children. The company claims that BlueMail does not include content filtering and is not fit for children. It further said that because the app could potentially generate adult content, it must use the 17+ age restriction.

To gain Apple’s approval, BlueMail may need to move its age restriction to 17 and older or include content filtering that Apple deems appropriate. Presently, the app’s age restriction is set for users four and older. An Apple spokesperson said that developers can challenge rejections via the App Review Board process and that it’s currently looking at Blix Inc’s complaint.

Not the first time
Incidentally, BlueMail and Apple have a history. The duo haven’t exactly shared the best of relationships with Apple. Blix was on Fortnite maker Epic Games‘ side in its fight against Apple. The developer is also one of the founding members of the Coalition for App Fairness, set up to fight the cut Apple takes from the App Store. The developer also previously filed a lawsuit claiming that the ‘Sign In With Apple’ feature infringed one of its patents.
