Apple may expand its Find My network support to Apple Pencils
Apple’s Find My network tracking features are supported by multiple devices including iPhones and AirPods. However, the Apple Pencil is still missing the capability. The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has recently published an Apple patent application. The patent describes a system that the company may use to include its Find My network support for tracking the Apple stylus. As per the patent, users can locate a lost Apple Pencil with future models. A recent Apple research mentions incorporating acoustic resonators within the stylus to locate them. But, for this technology to work, the Apple Pencil will have to be very close to the owner.
What is an acoustic resonator?
An acoustic resonator is a device which is designed specifically to resonate (or vibrate) in reply to sound waves or acoustic energy. These devices are manufactured primarily to improve or amplify specific frequencies or wavelengths of sound.
How will it work
“Locating a lost stylus, or other peripheral input device can be made possible by acoustic resonators integrated within housing structures of the stylus. Acoustic resonators can be formed at an end of the stylus opposite its tip and can include portions of the stylus outer housing that are thinned down to an engineered thickness that has a particular resonant behaviour or frequency,” Apple said in the patent.
The patent claims that acoustic resonators, including a resonant diaphragm, will be located in the cap of the Pencil. It also outlines a method by which an iPhone will be able to generate a sound that will interact with the resonators of the Apple Pencil.

After activating, these resonators will produce a sound that will help users to locate a misplaced Apple Pencil. The cap covering will also have openings that will allow changes in air pressure caused by the vibrations of the diaphragm. This would be important for the sound to be produced and emitted from the stylus.
Unlike AirPods, the system to locate an Apple stylus may work only when it is nearby. Considering the limited space available within the Apple Pencil, this technology might be the only solution.
