0 36

Tang Tan, the Vice President of Product Design at Apple, who oversees the design of iPhones and Apple Watches, is departing this coming February.

Sources within Apple have revealed to Bloomberg that the departure of a key team member, named Tan, has dealt a significant blow to the company’s design team. Tan was responsible for making critical decisions about Apple’s most important products and had a major influence on the design of other products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods.

Tan’s role in Apple
Tan’s team had tight control over product features, including the look of devices and how they were engineered. In particular, Tan helped turn AirPods and the Apple Watch into major growth drivers for Apple.

With Tan’s departure in February 2024, the company has had to shake up its most important product lines.

Tan has worked directly under John Ternus, who holds the position of Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.

Who will take the role of Tan
Apple’s hardware engineering team will undergo a “reshuffling” as Rico Zorkendorfer, vice president of engineering, departs from the company. Currently, Zorkendorfer reports to John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. Upon his departure, Zorkendorfer’s responsibilities will be divided among other members of the team.

Richard Dinh, who is a part of Zorkendorfer’s team and leads iPhone product design, will receive an expanded role and begin reporting directly to Ternus. Kate Bergeron, who is currently leading the Mac hardware engineering team, will take over the design of the Apple Watch.

The report suggests that Apple may be preparing for more leadership changes in the coming year, as other Mac product design and iPhone hardware executives were recently promoted.

Tan’s departure is the second key executive departure to break into the news. Earlier this week, it was reported that Steve Hotelling, who worked on key technologies like the iPhone’s multitouch screen, Touch ID, and Face ID, is retiring from Apple.

In 2019, Jony Ive, who had been the chief designer at Apple, left the company in 2019, after working on some of Apple’s major products, including iPhones for three decades.
