Citing state’s Large and Medium Industries minister, M B Patil, news agency PTI reported that the major iPhone assembler for Apple may set up the unit at Devanahalli Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) in the state.

He said that chief minister Siddaramaiah chaired a high-level meeting with the delegates from Foxconn, headed by its CEO, Brand Cheng, in this regard. As per the proposal, Foxconn Industrial Internet (Fii), which is a subsidiary of Foxconn, plans to invest Rs 8,800 crore.

“This would create 14,000 jobs and the land required for the project is about 100 acres,” Patil said. The minister said in a tweet that the state is ready to provide the land required to set up the manufacturing unit in the Japanese industrial Park near Tumakuru.

“Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII), a global leader & maker of network devices for IIoT-based smart manufacturing, aims to revolutionise the tech industry by developing high-quality outer covers for iPhones,” he tweeted.

iPhone manufacturing plant process in ‘final stages’
Last week, Patil said that the process of handing over land to Foxconn for its mobile devices manufacturing unit at Devanahalli ITIR is in the “final stages.”

“Foxconn is coming up in about 300 acres. The process of handing over land is in its final stages, there were some issues, so I have personally held meetings four times in this regard, as we did not want to lose the project. Foxconn, which manufactures Apple phones, is very prestigious for us,” the minister said.

Tata may make iPhones in India
The development comes a week after a report claimed that Tata Group is close to an agreement to acquire the Wistron factory in Karnataka as soon as August. The news is significant because it will make Tata the first local company to move into the assembly of iPhones.

The factory, which is reportedly valued at $600 million, employs more than 10,000 workers who assemble iPhone 14 models. Wistron has committed to ship iPhones worth $1.8 billion from the factory through March 2024 and Tata is said to honour these commitments. Notably, Wistron exported nearly $500 million in iPhones from India between April and June 30.
