Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Denounces Threats As Game Passes Huge Milestone

0 18

It looks like Larian Studios has landed a critical hit, as Baldur’s Gate 3 has far surpassed 10 million players. The director of publishing for the developer revealed the major milestone for the RPG over the weekend, as well as warned against “threats [and] toxicity” toward his team.

Spotted by VGC, Larian executive Michael Douse mentioned the dramatic player base increase on X (formerly known as Twitter) while talking about how mod support is coming to consoles for Baldur’s Gate 3. “This is a game that went from [roughly] 2 [million] players to way over 10 [million] in a very short space of time, so it’s natural the conversation becomes muddier and complex,” Douse wrote on the social media site. “But in order to maintain the same level of dialogue, we need people to understand that these conversations take time.”

Apparently, Baldur’s Gate 3 updates have been disrupting unofficial mods for the RPG too, leading to some unkind feedback toward the developers as official mod support gets worked on. Douse does say that most of the game’s community is understanding. But, “a few bad eggs will start a fire,” he writes.

Earlier this year, Larian Studios founder and CEO Swen Vincke had some strong words about gaming subscription services. He ultimately believes “direct from developer to players is the way.” It’s also likely a large reason why Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t included as part of PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was GameSpot’s game of the year for 2023 and recently won the DICE game of the year award as well. For more, check out GameSpot’s Baldur’s Gate 3 review along with the guides hub for the RPG.
