The control room will coordinate with Sarathi vehicle staff plying on roads to attend to passengers’ grievances.

BMTC has introduced ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) on a pilot basis for three months. It has devices such as vision sensor camera, DMS (driver monitoring system) camera, GPS unit and an eyewatch, all mounted on the vehicle’s front windshield glass and interconnected. This helps the driver get real-time audio and visual warnings on potential hazards on the road.

The objective is to ensure buses maintain safe distance from other vehicles, avoid collision and get speed limit warnings, among others. The DMS assesses the driver’s alertness on the road.

These devices were demonstrated before transport minister Ramalinga Reddy and senior BMTC officials Wednesday. During the pilot, the devices were installed in 10 buses operating on Outer Ring Road.

Sarathi vehicles to attend to SoS alerts

A BMTC official said under the Nirbhaya scheme, the corporation has put in place surveillance systems in 5,000 buses by installing cameras and panic buttons. This will enable passengers to contact the BMTC control room during emergencies, when women passengers are in distress or if there’s a fight between bus crew and passengers.

The control room will coordinate with Sarathi vehicle staff plying on roads to attend to passengers’ grievances. They can also use the SoS system, which is available on the BMTC app, to contact the control room.
