Brave launches its privacy-focused AI assistant on Android

0 15

Privacy-focused browser Brave has extended the availability of its built-in AI assistant, Leo, to Android devices. Leo, which first launched on desktop browsers in November 2023, allows users to interact with an AI directly from the browser’s address bar or on web pages without having to switch interfaces.

The addition of Leo to Android brings all of its capabilities to mobile, allowing users to get help, information, and tasks from their phone or tablet. According to the latest blog post, Android users can now use Leo to create summaries of web pages or videos. They can get translations of pages between English and other languages, including French, German, Italian and Spanish. The AI assistant can also help plan travel itineraries, cook recipes, write code, and more.

Brave says AI assistant Leo protects user privacy

Brave says users won’t have to wait until they’re back at their computer to get help from an AI. The company claims that early adoption of Leo on the desktop has been strong, and they’re hoping to see similar usage on the growing Android platform.

The standard AI model that powers Leo conversations is Mixtral 8x7B. This model is known for its multilingual capabilities and features like code generation. Brave claims it also shows strong performance in benchmarks while reducing bias compared to other large language models.

For those who want higher usage limits for Leo, a premium subscription is available for $14.99 per month. The subscription provides access to up to 5 devices running Android, Linux, MacOS and Windows linked to a single Brave account.

The Opera browser made a similar move last year. In June, the company announced that its Aria AI assistant would be rolled out to all Android users. The feature is available for free and is based on OpenAI’s GPT model.
