BYD to launch Atto 3 SUV at Auto Expo 2023

BYD entered the Indian market with the e6 which is an MPV and was only sold to fleet operators. Now, the manufacturer will be entering the mass market with their new Atto 3. According to Autocar India, BYD will launch the Atto 3 at the Auto Expo 2023. The SUV was launched in China back in February 2022.

The manufacturer will probably bring it as a CBU or Completely Built Unit which means it would be priced slightly higher but will have an exclusivity factor to it. The media reports say that BYD could price the Atto 3 around Rs. 30 lakhs. The Atto 3’s biggest rival will be the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric.

BYD Atto 3 measures 4,455 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, and with a wheelbase of 2,720 mm. This means that it is larger than the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric. Both of which look more like a crossover than a SUV. So, it makes sense that you are paying more for a larger vehicle.

The Atto 3 gets a permanent magnet synchronous motor that can generate a max power output of 204 hp and a peak torque output of 310 Nm. It can hit a ton in 7.3 seconds which is good enough for a vehicle that weighs 1,680-1,750 kgs.

When compared, the MG ZS EV produces 176 PS of max power and 280 Nm of peak torque. The Kona Electric produces 136 PS and 395 Nm. So, the Atto 3 is also significantly more powerful than the rivals.

In the global market, BYD sells Atto 3 with two battery packs. There is a 49.92 kWh battery pack with a driving range of 320 km and a 60.48 kWh battery pack with a driving range of 420 km. Both driving ranges are calculated using the WLTP cycle.

Moreover, BYD is using Blade Battery technology which is patented by the company. They claim that these batteries are safer in unfriendly conditions. You can charge the Atto 3 using a 3-pin AC or Type-2 AC charger. Moreover, the SUV also supports 80 kW DC fast charging. BYD claims that the battery can be fully charged in under an hour if you can find a DC fast charger.

The SUV is also very well equipped. There are LED headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lamps, panoramic sunroof, digital instrument cluster, powered tailgate, 18-inch alloy wheels, electric adjustment for the seats, 12.9-inch touchscreen that can rotate, ambient lighting and much more.

For safety, there is an Electronic Stability Program, tyre pressure monitoring system,  seven airbags, hill descent control and a 360-degree parking camera. BYD is also offering a suite of Advanced Driver Aids Systems. So, you get blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control with stop and go in traffic, front and rear collision warning, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic braking.

Sources of Autocar India have revealed that the BYD Atto 3 will be a fully equipped version so we can expect Advanced Driver Aids and other features to also come to India. However, because of this, the price of the Atto 3 will increase a bit.
