ChatGPT Can it Make Easy for Troll Armies: Georgetown University Report

ChatGPT for troll armies will prove to be a game changer for the opportunity it would give to push vile content as genuine

Community is nothing but shared values and communication is its other name. Technology has been a driver of community engagement and thanks to troll armies it is ruined in equal measure. From manipulating political campaigns to disseminating fake news, troll bots have had a field day and will continue to. Now that chatGPT, the intuitive bot is let loose on the internet, experts are asking if the AI chatbot will make the ground more fertile for troll bots to go wild. Like a wildfire, say researchers from Georgetown University. The report though speaks about GPT models in general, and the mitigative measures social media platforms can take, at certain points, it clearly mentions the potential threat language models can unleash. “The potential of language models to rival human-written content at low cost suggests that these models, like any powerful technology, may provide distinct advantages to propagandists who choose to use them,” the report says. Further, it warns, “These advantages could expand access to a greater number of actors, enable new tactics of influence, and make a campaign’s messaging far more tailored and potentially effective.” ChatGPT for troll armies will prove to be a game-changer.

Apart from spreading misinformation, the AI systems can make it difficult for users to differentiate it from genuine content, says the co-author of the paper Josh Goldstein. While we are mesmerized by its contextual capabilities, we are forgetting that the same feature can be put to work to make offensive content masquerade as quality tweets or social media posts. Goldstein says, “Generative language models could produce a high volume of content that is original each time… and allow each propagandist to not rely on copying and pasting the same text across social media accounts or news sites.”

As of now, there are only a few players in the generative AI market, restricting the chances of propagandists taking advantage. As the number of companies increases, the control over what is put on public platforms will go haywire. “If more actors invest in state-of-the-art generative models, then this could increase the odds that propagandists gain access to them,” his report says. The propagandist content can be mistaken for spam, which is often used for commercial purposes, to spin vile and provocative content.  “People who spread spam around rely on the most gullible people to click on their links, using that spray and pray approach of reaching as many people as possible. But with AI, that squirt gun can become the biggest Super Soaker of all time”, says Mr. Gary Marcus, an AI specialist and founder of Geometric Intelligence, an AI company acquired by Uber in 2016.
