Don’t expect an iPhone SE in 2024

0 45

It appears that we won’t be getting a new iPhone SE next year either. This is according to Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O’Malley, who have had “multiple conversations” with companies in Apple’s supply chains.

The analysts have stated that Apple’s decision to not launch a new iPhone SE is likely because its in-house 5G modem is not going to be ready anytime soon. Currently, Apple is using Qualcomm’s own 5G modem in the iPhone, since 5G landed on the iPhone in 2020. Apple has been working on its own 5G modem since at least 2018. And it even acquired Intel’s smartphone modem business in 2019.

The iPhone SE typically launches every four years

Before the 2022 iPhone SE, the previous iPhone SE had launched four years after the initial one. This is because it’s not a big seller for Apple. It’s seen as an entry-level iPhone, that comes in at a much lower price than the new iPhones. Typically, only people that just needed a phone, or really missed the old design, would buy an iPhone SE.

The only reason, at least the only speculated reason, for an iPhone SE launch in 2022 was because, the carriers wanted a model with 5G. The 2020 model did not launch with 5G, as it launched before the iPhone 12 – which ushered in 5G for the iPhone. And carriers don’t want to sell phones that don’t have 5G capabilities. Which is why the second and third generation models were so similar.

The next iPhone SE we get, could be a full-screen model, think the iPhone X or Xr as the design for the next one. As the old iPhone 8 design is getting very, very old. And the SE is technically the only iPhone still supported with a physical button, with iOS 17 launching this fall. So those waiting on an iPhone SE, you’re going to be waiting for quite some time.
