Final Fantasy XIV Xbox Series X|S open beta begins in two weeks

Final Fantasy XIV launched over a decade ago. Yeah, you read that right. The live-service epic was first released for PC and PlayStation 3 in August 2013. Despite initial teases of an Xbox 360 version many moons ago, Xbox console owners have been left out in the cold.

That decade-plus drought finally ends soon. Square Enix confirmed that the Final Fantasy XIV open beta heads to Xbox Series X|S on February 21.

Phil Spencer hit the stage at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in July to announce the Xbox Series X|S version. At the time, the open beta was said to be “coming soon.” Seven months later, the MMORPG’s Xbox debut is nearly here.

The Xbox Final Fantasy XIV open beta is only available to new players. If you have an existing account on PC or PlayStation consoles, you won’t be eligible to participate. The listing isn’t there yet, but a Final Fantasy XIV Free Trial version will be available to download on the Xbox Store as the open beta/free trial goes live on February 21 around midnight PST.

Square Enix states the open beta for Xbox Series X|S has “the same content, features, and limitations” as the game’s free trial that’s available to demo on other systems. However, while in open beta, you aren’t able to make any purchases in the FFXIV online store.

The Final Fantasy XIV Free Trial is pretty robust. Square Enix allows players to experience the title for as long as they like with few restrictions all the way to Level 70.

If you’re currently playing Final Fantasy XIV on another platform and want to continue your adventure on Xbox, Square Enix asks that you wait until the official (non-open beta) version of the MMORPG debuts immediately after the open beta’s conclusion.

It’s worth noting that Final Fantasy XIV is a subscription-based title. There’s a monthly fee you’ll have to pony up to keep your adventure going. Unlike on PlayStation, the Xbox Series X|S version will also require an Xbox Game Pass Core or Ultimate subscription to play.
