As fans wait for new about the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, new reports have suggested that a separate Elden Ring game is in development at Chinese company Tencent. In a surprising twist that nobody saw coming, Tencent is reportedly working on an Elden Ring mobile game for iOS and Android. Unlike its console counterpart, the mobile version of Elden Ring will reportedly launch as a free-to-play release, similar to games like Genshin Impact.
That’s according to a new report published by Reuters, which claims that Tencent “set up a team of a few dozen people to work on a prototype” after purchasing the Elden Ring licensing rights.
However, with the original release created to provide a deep experience following a one time purchase, adapting it as a free-to-play game has been difficult.
Indeed, the report states that progress on the Elden Ring mobile game has been slow, so don’t expect to see it in the immediate future.
The report also names Genshin Impact, which is developed by rival company miHoYo. Similar to Genshin Impact, the Elden Ring mobile game would reportedly be available to download for free, but would come with various in-app purchases.
It’s all part of Tencent’s plan to reinvigorate its gaming division, which has been overshadowed by Genshin Impact’s success.
In the meantime, Elden Ring developer FromSoftware is busy working on the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, which is tipped to launch within the next few months.
Recent reports suggest that the hugely anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is in the final stages of testing. That’s based on updates to its SteamDB page, which added various QA testing tags.
Elden Ring producer Yasuhiro Kitao previously confirmed that the expansion wouldn’t be available until the next fiscal year, which begins in April.
Based on Kitao’s comments and updates to the game’s SteamDB listing, there’s a good chance Shadow of the Erdtree could make its debut this April.
