Google has announced two new upgrades for Google Drive: faster loading and buffering times for videos and new options for searching files. Let’s take a look.

Google Drive will now load videos faster

Google is “enabling the generation and playback of Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) video transcodes for all new videos uploaded to Google Drive.” According to the company, this will enable “adaptive bitrate playback, which allows users to receive higher or lower resolution playback based on aspects like their local network quality.

This change will offer two benefits. One, it will reduce join time, which is the time required for the video to start playing after you click on the play button. Two, it will reduce re-buffering while playing videos at normal as well as higher speeds. While Google will apply this feature only to videos that will be uploaded from now on to the platform, the company will enable this change to videos already uploaded to the platform by the end of this year.

Searching files on Google Drive gets easier

Google has released a new version of the Google Drive app for iOS. It brings filter categories, which makes searching for files easier and more convenient. You now get four filters: Search in My Drive, Type, People, and Modified. So, if you were searching for a PDF file that you had uploaded to your account in the last seven days, check the Search in My Drive filter, choose PDFs in the Type filter, your name/account in the People filter, and Last 7 days in the Modified filter, and you will now see all files matching those criteria.

According to Google, these filters will come to Android “soon.” The two changes will be available to “Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.
