Google may bring this photos-related feature to videos on Pixel 8

Google Pixel 8 rumours have started to pour in. If latest reports are to be believed, Google may be bringing new, AI-powered camera features alongside the new camera design. These new features are reported to come for videos – a department where Pixel smartphones have struggled in the past.

As per a report by 9to5google, Google recently uploaded the latest APK for the Google Photos app to the Play Store. The publication found lines of code which suggest that Google is readying Video Unblur, a feature that is likely to work in the same way as the Photo Unblur feature, released in the Pixel 7 series of smartphones.

Video Unblur on Pixel 8
The Video Unblur tool will reportedly sharpen videos, just like it did with photos in the Pixel 7 series. The Photo Unblur feature uses Tensor chip’s machine learning capabilities to sharpen images even though they are not taken by Pixel smartphones.

The images shared by 9to5google show that there is no noticeable difference in blur and ‘unblurred’ videos, suggesting the feature is under development. Once it is fully developed, it might bring the same effectiveness in videos as it brings in photos.

Video overlay effects
Apart from Video Unblur, Google may also bring a set of effects in Google Photos for videos. They will reportedly appear in a new “Overlays” tab when editing a video in the app.

The report also claimed that there are a total of 14 video effects: After School, B&W, Chromatic, Forward, Glassy, Golden, Moire, Multiply, Polaroid, Rainbow Rays, Reflect, RGB Pulse, Super 8, and VHS.

Pixel 7 camera features
Both Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones come with the Cinematic blur feature that is like Cinematic Mode on the ‌iPhone‌. The feature adds a depth of field to video recordings by shifting focus on the main subject in the frame. Other features include Magic Eraser, Real Tone and Guided Frame for photography.
