Google News app gets a Material You redesign

Google News on Android is the latest app to get Google’s Material You theme. Apart from this, the app has also been updated to adjust to a larger display, such as Android tablets and foldable smartphones.

The app features a bottom bar designed according to the Material You style, which uses pill-shaped indicators to indicate the active tab.

The Dynamic Colour theming is missing in this app. So, the interface does not adjust its colours to match the wallpaper of your home screen, and blue remains the default accent colour used throughout the app. There is no word on when and if the Google News app will support Dynamic Colour theming.

On tablets, the app incorporates a navigation rail on the left side of the screen, which seamlessly merges with the app bar containing the search, “Google News,” and profile avatar options. As you scroll down, the top element disappears, but the framing effect is retained, and the side rail blends in with the system status bar.

Moreover, when the dark theme is enabled, the content is presented on a darker background.

Compared to the old version of the News app, where the main feed was framed with side borders, the current version presents content that extends edge-to-edge. This design enables larger cover images and more text to be displayed.

Currently, the Material You redesign for Google News is only available on tablets running version 5.78. This update is being rolled out via the server side.

Google News has been the last of the few major first-party applications that had not yet incorporated the Material You design.

Recently, some components of Google Search, such as the primary settings and the account switcher, were updated to the new design. However, the bottom bar still has the old design and is yet to be replaced with the Material You one.
