Google releases Android 14 TV beta: Here is what’s new

Google has launched a preview of Android 14 on TV to give an idea of what to expect from the upcoming OS update. The rollout coincides with the release of Android 14 Beta 3 for Pixel smartphones. It is to be noted that the company did not provide much information about this upcoming release at Google I/O 2023.

You can download the Android TV 14 beta and run it on an emulator of the preview using Android Studio. Google used to offer a build that could be installed on their ADT-3 boxes, but it has not been released on the Android Developers website yet.

It is noteworthy that you cannot install the Android TV 14 preview on a Chromecast device.

Google has still not released the Android 13 TV
Recently, Google updated the Chromecast with Google TV which has 4K resolution. However, the device is still using Android 12 and it appears that Google has decided not to release an Android 13-based update for any Android TV or Google TV devices.

This seems to be a case of a code change in the Android 14 beta that Google may have retired Android 13 for televisions. As a result, the Android Studio will hide the emulator for this version in a non-recommended menu.

Android TV 14 also brings new accessibility options, energy modes, and a redesigned PackageInstaller app. The “format selection” option allows for conversion to different display formats, and there are new colour correction settings.

Call notifications from supported apps can be enabled, and there are shortcuts for favourite apps and inputs. The Google TV launcher may include a “Headphones” option for a quick Bluetooth connection.

The beta version of Android 13 TV mainly included technical improvements such as new APIs and better accessibility options. Meanwhile, Android TV version 14 is expected to bring significant changes and features.

It is expected that Google and its partners will promptly make the update available to their users once it is released to the public.
