Google wants Android users to get the December security update immediately, here’s why

0 23

Google has started rolling out this month’s security patch for Android devices. With the December security update, the tech giant has fixed 85 vulnerabilities which also included a critical one (CVE-2023-40088). Meanwhile, Google listed only 16 system vulnerabilities which also included the critical security flaw. This particular flaw was listed as an RCE or Remote code execution. It means that this could have been used by attackers to place their own code into the system of a target phone without the user’s knowledge or permission. However, Google didn’t specify whether this security flaw was exploited in the past. The company claims that the vulnerability has now been fixed and Android users should download the update immediately.

What Google said about this security flaw
Google mentioned this particular flaw in the Android Security Bulletin. The company wrote: “The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in the System component that could lead to remote (proximal/adjacent) code execution with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation,” Google classified this vulnerability as “critical.”

The company also noted that the flaw was affecting multiple Android versions which include Android 11, 12, 12L, 13 and 14.

Pixel feature drop: What to expect
It is important to note that Google didn’t release the Pixel update along with the December security patch. This is because the December Pixel update will be a Quarterly Platform Release (also known as the Pixel Feature Drop) and to show its importance Google may release it separately.

The upcoming update is expected to bring multiple new features for eligible Pixel models. One of the features coming for the Pixel 8 Pro is Video Boost. This feature will take recorded videos from the phone, make two copies, and send one through the cloud to Google. The company’s computational photography capabilities “boost” this video and send it back to the users. When the video is ready, users will get a notification and it will be added to their Google Photo library.
