Google’s GBoard beta testing ‘Undo’ button for improved typing: Report

0 46

Google is reportedly developing an “Undo” button for its Android keyboard, GBoard. This new feature aims to enhance typing capabilities by allowing users to retrieve deleted text. As per the reports, similar to desktop operating systems, the Undo button is currently undergoing testing and is accessible in the latest GBoard beta version. However, there is no definitive timeline for its public release.

The new “Undo” feature in GBoard was initially reported by 9to5Google and confirmed by developer rkbdi (shared by Akos Paha). It is currently available in the GBoard beta version but is disabled by default. In the settings menu, the feature is expected to be located within GBoard’s overflow buttons.

However, Google has recently introduced the ability to customize the overflow menu, which could potentially make accessing the “Undo” button more convenient. It is important to note that the final version of the feature may differ in its implementation, aiming for improved user-friendliness and accessibility.

Interestingly, the reports suggest that the new “Undo” button on GBoard’s virtual keyboard, similar to its feature on desktop operating systems, will allow users to perform a “Control+Z” or “Command+Z” action. This function essentially enables the undoing of actions and facilitates the retrieval of recently deleted text from a text field.

In a video demonstration, the user showcased how they could simply select the “Undo” button from the overflow menu to restore text that had been recently typed and subsequently deleted.

According to reports from 9to5Google, Google is planning to implement this functionality across the entire system, making it compatible with various text input scenarios where GBoard is being used. This means that the “Undo” feature will be available not only in the search bar’s text field but also in third-party applications, as long as GBoard is set as the default keyboard. Users can expect a consistent experience and the ability to utilize the “Undo” function wherever they can type using GBoard.
