Google’s refreshed Find My Device network delayed as it waits for Apple

0 71

Apple has the Find My app which can come in really handy to track lost/stolen devices. While one may not always find their lost devices, there’s the option to track devices. At its annual developer conference, Google announced that it is expanding its Find My Device network. Now, Google has said that its plan has been delayed. “At this time we’ve made the decision to hold the rollout of the Find My Device network until Apple has implemented protections for iOS,” said Erik Kay, vice president, engineering, Google.

Apple and Google had announced a joint initiative to adopt unwanted Bluetooth tracker alert standard. While Google has announced a few features, the wider functionality is still on hold. It’s not clear when Apple may do so and Google hasn’t given any tentative timeline either.

What is Google’s Find My Device network and how it works?

Google’s Find My Device currently helps you locate misplaced devices that have location capabilities. However, they must be connected to the internet in order for the network to track the device.

The new Find My Device experience works differently. Google has added the ability to track devices quickly and securely by ringing compatible devices or viewing their location on a map in the app – even when they’re offline. “The new Find My Device network will harness over a billion Android devices across the world to help you locate your missing belongings like headphones, tracker tags, or even your phone via Bluetooth proximity,” Google had said during I/O 2023.

Apple’s Find My works similarly and can be used to track AirTag and other Apple devices as well. Apple hasn’t said anything about enabling Google’s Find My Device feature.
