Government Plans To Expand Metro Service To Multiple Cities In Rajasthan

The newly elected BJP government in Rajasthan intends to significantly improve public transportation infrastructure.

The primary goal is to transition the Jaipur Metro Railway Corporation Limited (JMRCL) into the Rajasthan Metro Railway Corporation Limited, hence expanding metro services to other cities across the state.

According to authorities at the Urban Development and Housing (UDH) department, which supervises JMRCL, this strategic move is part of the government’s ambitious 100-day plan.

“The vision is clear: the government intends to introduce metro services in various cities. Rather than establishing individual metro corporations for each city, the plan is to streamline operations under a unified state-level entity,” said a senior UDH official as quoted by Times of India. While the decision is still seeking final approval, it intends to optimise resources and enable the effective expansion of metro networks.

While the exact cities or towns designated for metro development are unknown, significant metropolitan centres including Udaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, and maybe Bikaner are being considered, reports add.

Meanwhile, the UDH official emphasised continuity and hinted at entrusting JMRCL with the critical function of guiding the development of the new organisation. Notably, the government continues to prioritise Line 2 of the Jaipur Metro, which will connect Sitapura and Ambabari. However, urgent attention is focused on the ongoing Line 1 extension projects.

Furthermore, this strategy demonstrates the government’s commitment to modernising transport infrastructure and encouraging sustainable urban growth. By consolidating metro operations under a single institution, the administration hopes to expedite planning, execution, and maintenance processes, resulting in seamless connection and improved mobility alternatives for Rajasthan citizens.
