How Meta fuelled the number of downloads of this ‘other’ Threads app

It has been over 10 days now since Meta’s Twitter rival arrived. Threads app created quite a stir raking in number of downloads and users, creating a record. In just under 5 days, the app saw 100 million users. The numbers are now on the down but the Threads effect seems very much in play. According to a report by TechCrunch, a Threads’ namesake has also seen impressive growth, just because of its name. Incidentally, the founder of the ‘other’ Threads app is a former employee of Facebook.

According to the report, Threads (which is a Slack alternative) saw close to 8,80,000 downloads between July 6 to July 12. What’s more impressive is that these downloads are only iOS. On Android, the number was even better as the app garnered over 1 million downloads.

On the App Store, this Threads app was the 52nd most downloaded app in the world. In the business category apps, it was the third most downloaded app. Spain, Germany and Italy are the three countries where the app saw the most downloads. Incidentally, the Threads app from Instagram wasn’t launched in European Union, including these three countries.

What the app founder has to say

In a statement to TechCrunch, Rousseau Kazi, co-founder and CEO, Threads, said “Threads is a powerful word and an internet native term. Using threads — on various platforms — is the best way to stay connected with your [.net]work or [.com]pany. Given this, it comes as no surprise that Meta chose a powerful label to represent their take at building the town square.”

Kazi was part of Facebook for six year as part of the product management team. “Zuck (Mark Zuckerberg), Adam Mosseri (now Instagram CEO), and the team are easily some of the best mentors and minds I’ve got to work with and learn from,” Kazi added.
