How the Indian PC and tablet market ‘performed’ in the year 2022

0 34

The Indian PC shipments market – which includes desktops, notebooks and tablets – grew 5% on a year-over-year (YoY) basis in the year 2022, according to a recent report by research firm Canalys. However, the shipments suffered a massive decline of 22% year on year in the fourth quarter of 2022 (Q4 2022). HP led the Indian PC (excluding tablets) market, with over 30% market share in both Q4 and full-year 2022. Apple surpassed Samsung in Q4 2022 to take the lead in the Indian tablet market, with new iPad launches.

Total PC shipments in 2022
According to the report, the total PC shipments in 2022 reached 19.6 million units. While notebook shipments fell by 7% to 11 million units, desktop and tablet shipments increased significantly by 37% to 3.2 million and 21% to 5.4 million units, respectively, last year.

When it comes to the Q4 2022 shipments, 4.1 million units were shipped in the quarter. The notebook shipments were down 31% to 2.3 million units, desktop shipments fell by 5% to 695,000 units and tablet shipments decreased by 7% to 1.2 million units.

Why did shipments fall in Q4 2022
The shipments fell in the last quarter of the calendar year 2022 mainly due to ongoing concerns of recession and inflation, Canalys said, adding that these concerns grew again after easing toward the end of 2022.

“Indian consumers spent on devices in the first half of 2022, but demand quickly tailed off, leading to a weak holiday season for vendors and retailers,” said Canalys Analyst Ashweej Aithal.

He added that the commercial sector continued to struggle with inventory and supply chain issues, but the fall in demand helped lessen procurement delays.
