Google Maps Street View feature is a handy tool that lets users explore the nearby areas, find shops, routes and locations. Street View feature is not widely available in India and you can use it to see your surroundings or a place in a completely interactive 360-degree view.

That said, Street View on Maps also shows names of nearby shops, buildings, cars parked, and roads. Basically, you can see everything as it is in real life. All this comes at the risk of revealing everything to the world and to prevent this from happening, Google has dedicated rules and regulations in place.

Google has some privacy policy
Google’s official support page confirms that “Street-level collections and Photo Paths are automatically blurred to obscure identifying information like faces and license plates.” Also, if you are the one uploading the 360-view photo then, you have the option to choose which elements in the photo will be visible and blurred to respect others’ privacy.

Google let’s users request the blur
In case, there’s something on Google Maps, you stumbled upon which should have been blurred or shouldn’t be a public portal like Google Maps, then there’s an option to request Google to verify and blur it. In case the photo has been uploaded by you or you know someone who has uploaded the photo, the you can also ask them to blur that part for you. And, it could be anything — your home, building number, address, car’s license plate, etc, basically anything that violates Google-contributed Street View privacy policies.

If you also have something like this and it’s bothering you, then here’s how you can request Google to blur it. But, before that, there are certain things that you need to know about it.

Photos once blurred are permanent. They can’t be unblurred again.
Google no longer supports Photo Paths. New Photo Paths can’t be published to Google Maps.
If Google doesn’t own the photo, the photo owner must blur the photo before it’s published. But, you can report it to Google and raise a blur request.
