How to use Progressive Web Apps on iPhone and iPad

Progressive Web Apps, also known as PWAs, are basically web apps designed using web technologies. In simple terms, web apps are basically a website installed on the phone as an app and acts and behaves and functions like an app to an extent.

The feature comes in handy, in case some app isn’t available on the platform. Or, in case you don’t want to download an app from the App Store.

Apple has supported web apps for a while now and it allows users to install a web app via Safari. If you are looking to install a web app on your iPhone or iPad, follow our step-by-step guide:

For those who aren’t aware, Apple was actually the first company to support web apps with the first iPhone launch. The iPhone 1 basically came with HTML-based apps that allowed users to add them on the homescreen and also provided a full-screen user experience.

  1. Steps to download and install web apps on iPhone and iPad
  2. Open Safari web browser on your iPhone or iPad
  3. Navigate to the website for which you want to install WPA
  4. Do note that not all websites support Progressive Web App. That means, you can only install web apps for the websites that support web apps.
  5. Tap on the Action button (also known as Share button)
  6. Scroll down the Share list and look for Add to Home Screen option
  7. Enter a name for the web app and hit the Add button

After this, the web app will be added to the Home Screen next to other apps installed on the device. Users can simply tap on the app to open it.

Also keep in mind that currently web apps do not support push notifications on iOS and iPadOS. The feature will be available with the iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 update and is currently being tested with a select group of users.
