How to use SBI, ICICI, HDFC and other bank credit cards to make payments using GPay, Paytm and other UPI apps

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is one of the most common modes of payment and transactions in the country these days. Starting from small vendors to big showrooms, restaurants, and even online e-commerce platforms accept this payment method.

That said, UPI usually allows users to make payments directly from their savings accounts. However, UPI apps like GPay, Paytm, etc also let users add their credit cards and use it to make UPI payments.

Supported credit cards and banks
Currently, UPI payments via credit cards are only via RuPay cards issued by banks. Also, not all banks are currently offering RuPay credit cards. Here’s a list of all the banks that offer RuPay credit cards.

Supported banks

  • Axis Bank
  • Bank of Baroda
  • Canara Bank
  • HDFC Bank
  • Indian Bank
  • Kotak Mahindra
  • Punjab National Bank
  • Union Bank
  • SBI (coming soon)

What you need

  • An active UPI account on apps like GPay, Paytm, etc)
  • Active RuPay credit card
  • The active mobile number that’s registered with the card
  • Internet access

How to get started with RuPay credit card on UPI
Open your choice of UPI app on your smartphone
Now, follow these steps on different UPI apps
GPay: Open → Tap on profile icon → Tap on RuPay credit card option → Select bank → Find card and verify
Paytm: Open → UPI & Payment Settings → Scroll down → Link Rupay credit card on Paytm UPI → Select bank → Find card and verify
PhonePe: Open → Profile Icon → Link Rupay credit card on UPI → Select bank → Find card and verify
BHIM: Open → Tap on bank account at the top → Tap ‘+’ icon at the bottom right → Select Credit card option → Select bank → Find card and verify

How to make payments using RuPay credit card using UPI
Irrespective of the UPI app you are using, all you need to do is register your card first and then follow the generic steps that you follow for normal UPI payments (via bank accounts). Here are the steps:

  • Scan a QR code, enter phone number or UPI number
  • Enter the amount you want to pay
  • Select the RuPay credit card from the payment options
  • Enter the PIN to make the payment
