Instagram could launch a Twitter clone this summer

Instagram is reportedly working on a Twitter clone. The app is due to launch this summer.

Many platforms tried to challenge Twitter but failed miserably. The latest platforms claimed to be a Twitter alternative are Mastodon and Bluesky. However, none of them can yet hang in the same crowd as Twitter. But Elon Musk’s-owned social platform might soon have to face a rival from Instagram.

The Verge reports that Lia Haberman has shared a leaked marketing slide in her ICYMI Substack newsletter that shed light on Instagram’s Twitter clone. The app doesn’t have a name yet, but it’s called “Instagram’s new text-based app for conversations” instead. Haberman adds that the project codename is P92, or it’s internally called Barcelona.

As you can see in the shared screenshot, the app’s environment is like Twitter, allowing users to share posts at approximately 500 characters with the ability to attach photos, videos, or links. Users can also sign in to the app with their Instagram username and password. Additionally, all data from the main account- like followers, bio, and verification- will be transferred to the text-based app.

The screenshot further reveals that users can control who replies to and engages with their posts. The blocked Instagram account can’t also access your posts on the new app.

But Meta wants to tighten its grip on Twitter by making its new app compatible with Mastodon. The marketing slide explains, “Users on these other apps will be able to search for, follow and interact with your profile and content if you’re public, or if you’re private and approve them as followers.” Meta confirmed in a statement that they’re “exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates.”

Instagram currently has over 1.3 billion users, making it one of the most popular social platforms globally. Relying on this massive user base, Instagram can certainly battle Twitter. Given that many Twitter users can look for an alternative following Musk’s takeover, the Instagram text-based app has a great chance for success from the beginning.

In response to the news, Elon Musk’s successor Linda Yaccarino tweeted, “Game on.” It remains to be seen how Twitter will respond to its new rival.
