Instagram, Snapchat, X or Threads; which was the most deleted app of 2023?

Social media has become an essential part of our daily lives with around 59.9% of the global population or 4.8 billion people on social media worldwide. However, given the shortening attention spans, users usually go for a mix of around 6-7 social media networks and spend an average of 2 hours and 24 minutes on them.

However, the time spent by users on these social media apps can vary dramatically which can affect these tech giants. For instance a tweet by Kylie Jenner in 2018 questioning if anyone used Snapchat anymore led to around $1 billion being wiped off from the company’s valuation.

In a similar vein, Meta launched its answer to the Twitter (X by then) connundrum by launching its Threads app aimed at becoming a ‘public square for communities’. While Meta’s X rival was the rage of the town for the first few days, becoming the only service to go past 100 million users in just 5 days, the dream run for debutant was soon over with 80% of the daily active users declining by August, data from TRG Datacentres showed.

To understand this conundrum, US-based TRG Datacentres took the 9 most popular social media networks worldwide and analysed how many times the term ‘how to delete (my) ___ account’ was searched in the last 12 months in order to analyze the social media companies that had lost favour with the users.

The data from TRG Datacentres, Instagram was the most eager to be deleted social media app with over 1 million searches on ‘how to delete (my) instagram account’ each month in 2023 which is equivalent to around 12,500 searches per 1,00,000 people globally.

The authors of the latest study had a stark warning for Instagram, noting, “Despite this, the app still boasts 2 billion users worldwide. However, if a million people continue to seek deletion of their accounts every month, the ‘Instagrammable’ bubble could burst, potentially altering its landscape within a year.”

The popular social media app for Gen-Z, Instagram was second on the list with around 1,30,000 people seeking to delete their Snapchat account, corresponding to roughly around 1,600 searches per 1,00,000 people globally.
