Jennifer Lopez’s alcohol brand confuses as she, Affleck tout sobriety

0 54

It’s hard to imagine why Jennifer Lopez thought she’d be the perfect celebrity to launch a brand of bottled cocktails, given that she’s long claimed she eschews alcohol for health and beauty purposes and her husband Ben Affleck has long battled addiction to alcohol and been to rehab multiple times.

Lopez’s fans and others have gone on her Instagram to let her know they aren’t thrilled about her attaching her name to a new product, Delola, which features three ready-to-drink spritzes made with vodka, tequila and amaro, People reported. The brightly colored, fruit- and rose-infused spritzes retail for $23 for a 750-milliliter bottle and will arrive in grocery stores, restaurants and bars this month.

“Who advised Jenny from the Block to launch an alcohol brand?” said a spokesperson for Creative Sobriety, a support community “for sober and sober-curious creatives.” The person said this is the “most confusing, off-band product launch” from a celebrity that’s been seen in a long time. Someone else called the venture into the alcohol business “a money grab.”

On Instagram and in an interview with People, the singer, actor and entrepreneur claimed the venture somehow aligns with her personal lifestyle and that her Delola cocktails are something she’d “want to drink with her friends and family.”

“I think as I’ve kind of gotten to be less of a workaholic and enjoy life a little bit more …it was something that I really, really wanted to do,” Lopez said of Delola in a video that also showed glamorous shots of the Italian coast. People magazine also said that “Lola” is Lopez’s private nickname.

“I love to entertain,” Lopez said. “I love throwing parties at my house. I’m always the first one on the dance floor at all of the industry events and at times, on vacation, dancing on the table. That is kind of who Lola is.”

On Instagram, Lopez insisted that her Delola drinks are somehow healthy because they contain no artificial ingredients and have a lower alcohol content than classic cocktails — about as much as a “glass of wine.”

But as some furious respondents to Lopez’s Instagram announcement noted, she herself has said she rarely, if ever, touches alcohol because teetotaling helps her stay in shape and keep her “J-Lo glow.”

“Jlo you don’t drink,” one person said. “This is like something that is known and has been pointed out on numerous occasions. I mean….I get it — a coin is a coin — but mama you don’t drink alcohol.”

People also said that that Lopez is newly married to a “sober partner.” That’s Affleck, who’s been the star of countless headlines over the years about how his alcohol abuse hurt his marriage to Jennifer Garner and did serious damage to his career as an actor and director.

“She’ll do almost anything for money and to stay relevant,” someone said. “Isn’t her husband an alcoholic?!

As recently as last month, Affleck told the Hollywood Reporter that he had become, “out of no desire of my own, one of the poster boys for actor alcoholism and recovery and the whole thing.”

Affleck said the benefits of being known for his alcohol problems are that people will seek out his help. “And it makes me feel so good to do that,” Affleck said, before extolling one of the reason that 12-step programs work. “The big trick of 12-step is the reason they want you to help other people is because it actually helps you more.”

Creative Sobriety said Lopez’s new product is “disappointing” and asked: “Why not create a NA brand considering you’ve been outspoken about the negative affects of alcohol and that you yourself don’t drink?”

“Ah capitalism strikes again,” said another person, who said that Lopez has said she only ever has a sip of alcohol when celebrating a special occasion. “J.Lo was an inspiration for me to stay away from alcohol, tho she is not sober, she talked about how she rarely drinks and if she does it’s a celebratory sip, so it’s a bummer she is promoting alcohol when there are so many great NA drinks!”
