Kevin Hart and Chris Rock Lead ‘Headliners Only’ Documentary Trailer

0 27

The purpose of Kevin Hart and Chris Rock‘s recent co-headlining “Rock Hart: Only Headliners Allowed” tour wasn’t just to place two big-name comedians on the same billing — but also to celebrate the series of events that allowed them to arrive at that moment. In the latest trailer for the pair’s upcoming Netflix documentary film, Kevin Hart & Chris Rock: Headliners Only, out Dec. 12, the pair discuss true friendship, family, and wanting their legacies to live forever.

“This is a story of two separate journeys that end up at the same intersection at the top,” Hart explains in the clip. Rock’s story began when he was a hungry teenager cracking jokes about fathers universally interrupting their children’s plans. “Once I got good,” he recalls, “things started moving really fast.” In the clip, fellow comedian Dave Chapelle compares Rock’s writing structure to that of a songwriter, containing a certain rhythm.

While Rock’s star was on the rise, Hart was working as a shoe salesman. It wasn’t until he dove into the New York comedy scene that his comedic persona began truly taking shape, and with that came a pivotal mentorship opportunity. “The first real comedic star that I had a conversation with was Chris Rock,” Hart adds. “Chris embraced me as a young comic.” It’s a sentiment understood by other tiers of veterans in the industry, like Wanda Sykes, who explains: “When you see someone else who has potential, you want them to be better.”

Hart and Rock have been friends for 20 years now but had never shared a stage before their five-show run in New York and New Jersey last summer. There, they hammered in what they believe to be a fundamental truth about the work that they do. “Art is subjective, comedy is subjective,” Rock says, his voice cutting through roaring laughter and thunderous applause. “Killing on stage is not subjective.”

Kevin Hart & Chris Rock: Headliners Only also features appearances and commentary from Jerry Seinfeld, Tiffany Haddish, Trevor Noah, and more. Directed by Rashidi Harper, the film will “give audiences a behind the scenes glimpse into the lives of two comedy titans … as they give first hand accounts of their early lives, struggles, triumphs and their unbreakable brotherhood.”
