The CCRS conducted a thorough inspection of the tunnel section beneath the river, including the tracks, ventilation, and lighting systems.

The railway officials inspected a segment of the East-West Metro, which connects Kolkata and Howrah via a tunnel beneath the Hooghly River on February 5.

According to an official statement, this particular section, which is eagerly awaiting the start of commercial services, has been scrutinised.

An important section of the East-West Metro, which runs 4.8 kilometres from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade and connects Kolkata and Howrah via a tunnel under the Hooghly River, was inspected under the direction of Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS), Janak Kumar Garg.

The inspection comprised a detailed evaluation of the tunnel section beneath the river, covering elements like the lighting, ventilation, and train systems.

When the CCRS and his team arrived at Esplanade, they checked the entry and exit gates, as well as the passenger interchange point between the East-West and North-South lines, among other things. It was reiterated that CCRS approval is required before the stretch can be commissioned and commercial services can begin.

Kolkata’s East-West Metro: Details Here

The East-West Metro in Kolkata is a one-of-a-kind engineering feat, with a 10.8 km underground corridor running beneath the Hooghly River from Howrah Maidan to Phoolbagan. This historic achievement, which will see the first train run through a river tunnel in India in April 2023, demonstrates Kolkata Metro’s innovative spirit.

According to Financial Express, Kolkata Metro is going to advance its technological capabilities by introducing the Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system on the Salt Lake Sector V-Sealdah stretch. The ATO system makes it possible for motoring activities to be automatically accelerated, decelerated, controlled, and arranged.

The metro train will move between stations automatically in ATO mode after the motorman long presses the ‘ATO departure’ button, with doors opening automatically upon arrival. This approach reduces the physical operations required of the motorman, who only needs to press the ‘door close’ button before starting the train.

Two major turning points in the history of urban transport in Kolkata are the planned opening of the entire East-West Metro corridor and the installation of the ATO system. Passengers can anticipate more dependable, efficient, and fast commutes, which will advance the city’s transition to a modern and modern future.

According to the Times of India, the East-West Metro received Rs 900 crore, compared to Rs 1,000 crore last year and Rs 1,100 crore the previous year. Meanwhile, the interim budget included adequate funding for Kolkata’s main Metro projects (the New Garia-Airport and Joka-Esplanade corridors).
