Kolkata Police department inducts 17 more Tata Nexon EVs to the force

Several government departments in India have started using electric vehicles as their official vehicle including police. Kolkata Police recently added 17 more Tata Nexon EVs to their electric vehicle fleet. The 17 brand new Tata Nexon EVs were added to the fleet on the occasion of World Environment Day. Kolkata Police organised the event as it pledged to contribute to a cleaner environment. Kolkata Police was already using electric vehicles and with new Tata Nexon EVs joining the department, total number of Nexon EVs in the fleet has gone up to 243.

The event was organised at the police Athletic Club in Kolkata. In the event, 17 Tata Nexon EV SUVs with blue strips and Kolkata Police badge on the side were flagged off. The department has added the Nexon EVs for patrolling purposes and they also mentioned that in coming days, they will be adding electric cycles to the fleet for patrolling. The Nexon EV were inducted to the department as part of state government’s plan to shift to electrical vehicles for official purposes. Kolkata government had announced this decision last year in September when the police department received its first batch of electric vehicles. Since then Kolkata Police has 226 Tata Nexon EVs in their fleet excluding the recently added 17 units.

The Nexon EVs replace the diesel vehicles that were used to transport and patrolling duties. The Tata Nexon EVs have been taken on lease for a period of 8 years. Various state governments and Central government are coming up with several policies to promote the use of electric vehicles. West Bengal government recently announced that electric two-wheeler and four-wheeler buyers will be exempted from paying registration fee, motor vehicle and other taxes in the state. Similar benefits are also being offered to buyers who plan to buy CNG vehicle. The announcement came into effect from 1st April this year and is valid till March 31 2024.

Tata Nexon EV is currently the best selling electric SUV in India. It was introduced few years ago and it quickly became popular among buyers for its price and the range. carrying the momentum from the success of Nexon EV, Tata recently launched the long range version of Nexon EV in the market. Tata Nexon EV offered a certified driving range of 312 km while the newly introduded EV Max version has a certified driving range of 437 km.

The ones inducted by Kolkata Police is the regular Nexon EV. The Nexon EV Max is equipped with a 40.5 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack. The battery capacity is 33 percent more than the regular Nexon EV.  Tata Nexon EV Max generates 143 Ps and 250 Nm of peak torque. Nexon EV Max is quick and it can do 0-100 kmph sprint in just under 9 seconds. It is available with options of a 3.3 kW charger or a 7.2 kW AC fast charger. Other than this Nexon EV Max also supports 50 kW DC charging which takes around 56  minutes to charge the Nexon EV Max from 0-80 percent.
