The auto parts maker Marelli was created in 2019, after KKR merged Calsonic Kansei with Magneti Marelli.

New Delhi: With software fast becoming a key element in enabling the vehicle of the future, global automotive supplier Marelli plans to grow the Indian talent pool for its embedded software engineering and test capabilities by hiring 1000 engineers in India for core competencies, a senior company official said.

“We are really good at embedded software in vehicle electronics. So step one is to focus on this area, given that in today’s semiconductor crisis that’s even more important as people look at alternative architectures and designs,” David Slump, President and CEO, Marelli, told ETAuto.

“Now to bring that together and to take it to another scale, we have made a global team decision to add a 1000 people in India in those areas. We don’t believe we can do it all alone, and since our technology centre is here, that’s one area of investment,” he said.

In September this year, the component supplier inaugurated its new technical R&D center at the Embassy Manyata Tech Park in Bengaluru to boost its innovation capability, particularly in software engineering. The centre now employs about 200 people. “Next year we want to double that to about 400 and then we will ramp up to a 1000, ” he said.

The company had earlier said that the centre is expected to employ around 600 engineers in 2 years. The focus of the Bangalore Center is on technology areas including electronics, automotive lighting and both internal combustion and electric powertrain.

In particular, it will develop software for Cockpit DCU (Domain Control Units), Digital Clusters, Powertrain, and Electric Powertrain products; system validation for Electronic Systems, Powertrain and Electric Powertrain products and Automotive Lighting in the future, including sensing technologies; and Mechanical Design Simulations for Electronics and moving forward for Automotive Lighting products.

The company’s engineering centre in Gurugram employs about 470 people. The Bengaluru and Gurugram centers will work in close collaboration with all the existing Marelli innovation centers in Japan, Italy, China, Germany, United States and the other countries where it is present.

The auto parts maker which has its strengths in lighting and interiors, was created in 2019 after KKR merged Calsonic Kansei with Magneti Marelli. In March 2022, the company, with total liabilities of USD 8.2 billion, went for debt restructuring and settlement. However, it then moved to court-led rehabilitation, which was worked out in August.

The expenditure will mainly be on capacity expansion to meet the growing demand for vehicles, and on new product development, including the development of capabilities/dedicated platforms for electric vehicles. The auto component manufacturers are also expected to scale up their investments to support their customers, says an ICRA note.

The work on the new plant will start immediately subject to receiving necessary approvals from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the company said.
