Navi Mumbai Metro: CIDCO Plans Two New Routes To Boost Connectivity To International Airport

Following the launch of the Navi Mumbai Metro (NMM) project Line 1, City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is gearing up to expand its metro network with two new routes in the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA).

These routes are designed with the aim of boosting connectivity to the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and the broader city. This move is part of City and CIDCO’s comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) for the region.

CIDCO has initiated the tender process to appoint a consultant for the CMP to pave the way for these projects. This is a crucial step to secure grants from the central govt for these initiatives. CIDCO vice chairman and managing director Vijay Singhal has allocated Rs 539.37 crore to NAINA region development and Rs 690 crore for metro expansion in the region in its recently presented annual budget. Encompassing 174 villages within a 25-km radius of Navi Mumbai International Airport, NAINA covers 371 sq. km.

CIDCO has proposed two new metro routes to boost connectivity within the NAINA region. The first route is planned from the Ulwe coastal road to Ambivali in Raigad, focusing on accelerating connectivity from NAINA areas to NMIA. The second proposed route under consideration is the Kalamboli-Chikhale-Kon corridor. Beyond enhancing connectivity between Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area and NMIA, this route is aimed at improving accessibility to key locations like Taloja MIDC, Panvel, and neighbouring areas.

The public relations officer NAINA of CIDCO, Mohan Ninawe, highlighted that the connections from Taloja to the airport (Lines 2, 3, and 4), Belapur to Mankhurd (Line 8A), and airport to Belapur (Line 1A) are being created for the expansion of the metro network. He went on to say that two metro lines are in the planning phase in NAINA, reported the Hindustan Times.

“The total distance covered by Navi Mumbai metro lines is 40 km, and in NAINA it will be 30 km, making a total of 70 km,” he added.

According to Mohan Ninawe, a 20 percent grant is expected from the central government, and to proceed, they need to submit a detailed CMP to the union ministry of housing and urban affairs.

Ninawe further highlighted the need for a CMP as per the Metro Rail Policy of the Government for justification of proposed metro lines. CIDCO has initiated the tender process to enlist consultants for crafting the CMP. Once the CMP is finalized, CIDCO can approach the central govt for the project funding.

In addition to that, CIDCO, in collaboration with the Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC), is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the two Metro corridors in Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area and Lines 2, 3, and 4.

The Urban Mass Transit Company’s assistance in examining potential alignments to Pendhar, Kasadi, Kalamboli, Khandeshwar, Kamothe, Taloja, and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport displays CIDCO’s commitment to robust metro infrastructure development in the region.
