This announcement was made by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in two different posts on X (formerly Twitter).

“We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI’s new leadership team and working with them. And we’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success,” Nadella said in a post on X.

Nadella’s post came around the time when a report by The Information said that dozens of OpenAI staffers internally announced they were quitting the company. A person with knowledge of the situation told the publication that the announcement was made after board director and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever told employees that fired CEO Sam Altman would not return.

Why this is a ‘bad news’ for OpenAI

Apart from reports which suggest that rivals like Google have been seeking to hire OpenAI staff, some employees have indicated that they are open to joining Altman in his new team at Microsoft.

Moreover, Nadella noted that Microsoft has hired Altman and former OpenAI president Brockman, “together with colleagues”, suggesting more OpenAI employees are coming to Microsoft.

If this is true, then the shift in employment is likely to hamper OpenAI’s ability to move forward in the ever-growing AI technology-led era.

“I’m super excited to have you join as CEO of this new group, Sam, setting a new pace for innovation. We’ve learned a lot over the years about how to give founders and innovators space to build independent identities and cultures within Microsoft, including GitHub, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn, and I’m looking forward to having you do the same,” the Microsoft CEO responded.
