TikTok chief operating officer, V. Pappas, has resigned. The development comes as the Chinese short-form video hosting service is facing scrutiny in the US over the ties of its parent company, ByteDance, to China.

The development was first reported by The Information and later Pappas posted the memo she sent to all employees on Twitter. Pappas, who has been associated with the company for 5 years, will stay at TikTok in an advisory role. According to the The Verge, Pappas was the US face of TikTok. She made announcements for the company and spoke about the company strategy and programming.

The news gains prominence because last month the company’s head of US trust and safety, Eric Han, left the company. The exit of two executives leaves TikTok without a key persons as it fights the threat of a ban in the US.

Five years ago when I was first approached by TikTok, I was incredibly inspired by the product vision to be a new mobile-first video experience that serves as a canvas, bridge and window for everyone. The pitch was to take on a role to transform and grow the product and broaden its appeal through developing diverse communities and content. I was sold.

I took a gamble on what was then a completely unknown company and product and followed my intuition, really my passion, to build a place for people to come together around shared moments of joy and creativity, and to foster a place that is inclusive and open to all. Five years later, we have grown to a global team of thousands of people and I believe we have achieved our goal to innovate and define an entirely new experience for people to share, create, and be entertained. Today I stand proud that we deliver a product that resonates with over one billion people around the world. Tik Tok is now a household name. My north star throughout it all was to uphold what I refer to as “the last sunny spot on the internet,” to build a platform for positive expression that celebrates diverse voices.

Given all the successes reached at TikTok, I finally feel the time is right to move on and refocus on my entrepreneurial passions. Few had imagined what the last five years would look like and with all the incredible innovation happening now with generative Al, robotics, renewable energy, genomics, blockchain and the loT, clearly the future will again look much different.

It has been an exhilarating ride with so many celebratory milestones, moments and industry ‘firsts.’ Together we also faced some of the industry’s most unprecedented challenges, and I am incredibly humbled to have been able to help steer the company during such periods, and I take each lesson with me.

I have had the honor to champion our creators, the heart and soul of the platform. We have launched a number of initiatives to support creators to own their voice, grow their audience, and earn a livelihood. In particular, supporting our diverse creators with efforts like our

‘culture of credit’ or ‘visionary voices’ initiatives has marked some of my personally most rewarding work. We have also pushed the industry toward more transparency and accountability – from launching our Content Advisory Council, to our Transparency Centers and APIs for researchers.

So, what’s next? I know the company has a very bright and stable future under the strong leadership of Shou Chew and our executive team, I will be here to support him, the leadership team and all of you during this transition by taking on an advisory role for the company.

For our amazing community of creators, employees, and people who have come to Tik Tok everyday to bring them joy and creativity – it’s through everything you do that Tik Tok is what it is today. It has been an absolute privilege to serve you all and to be a part of this rocketship and once in a lifetime journey of a once unknown product called TikTok.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew also sent a memo to employees saying Adam Presser, TikTok’s current chief of staff, will become TikTok’s head of operations, while Zenia Mucha is joining TikTok as the chief brand and communications officer.
