SHUT IN THEATER: Weekend Reading 113
It’s Memorial Day in the United States, and alongside the holiday arrives Weekend Reading 113! The Beat team will be spending the long weekend with a stack of prose and comics, and we want to hear what you’ll be reading, too!

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend I’ll be reading the first Heart of the City collection by Steenz, Heart Takes the Stage. Technically this is a re-read, but it’ll be the first time I’m reading the strips in paper form. Then, I’ve got the “star-studded first issue” of the 1980 Marvel Comics adaptation of Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Marv Wolfman, Dave Cockrum, Klaus Janson, John Costanza, and Marie Severin, or as I like to think of it, “The V*ger, or There and Back.”
DEAN SIMONS: I have less than half of Citadel of the Autarch to get through, which will cap off the whole of my reading of Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun. So priority one is that. As for comics, I continue my 2000AD catchup. I have reached the 45th anniversary special issue from February (prog 2270) which kicks off Dredd storyline The Citadel by John Wagner and Dan Cornwell but – more enticingly for me – the newest series of Brink by Dan Abnett and INJ Culbard and an Indigo Prime one shot by Kek-W and Lee Carter. The first appearance of Indigo Prime in the comic since prog 2148 some three years ago. (Sidenote: really digging the cover to prog 2274)
TAIMUR DAR: This Memorial Day weekend I’m taking much needed time to decompress from the crazy busy few weeks. Between Kenobi, new season of Stranger Things, and all the backlog of other shows I’ll likely be spending time with an old friend called television. But I likewise have a pile of comics from my pull list that I’m hoping to get to as well which include Rogues #2 by Joshua Williamson and Leomacs, X-Cellent #3 by Peter Miligan and Mike/Laura Allred, World’s Finest #3 by Mark Waid and Dan Mora, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Night of the Cyclops by Mike Mignola and Olivier Vatine, Flashpoint Beyond #1 by Geoff Johns/Jeremy Adams/TimSheridan and Xermanico, and more!
