Sony PlayStation 5 will now cost more in some regions, here’s why

0 56

Sony has increased the prices of PlayStation 5 in some ‘selected’ regions, including Europe, the UK, Japan and Canada, among a few others to name, and it has inflation to blame.

“The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing. We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries,” says Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The recommended retail price for the PlayStation 5 console has been increased in select markets across Europe, the Middle East, Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), and Canada.

The disc version of PlayStation 5 will now cost EUR 549.99 in Europe, while the price of the PS5 Digital Edition has been increased to EUR 449.99. In the UK, the disc and digital versions of the PS5 will bear a retail price of £479.99 and £389.99. The prices in Europe for both versions have been hiked by EUR 50 whereas the UK sees a £20 increase in the prices.

In the Asia-Pacific region, the prices have been hiked in Japan and China. In Japan, the disc version of the PS5 will retail for 60,478 yen, and the digital version will come at 49,478 yen; the prices are inclusive of taxes. In China, the digital and disc versions will be available at 4,299 yuan and 3,499 yuan.

As of now, there is no word if the prices will increase in India. We have reached out to Sony for comment, but we still await a response from the company.

Meanwhile, Sony makes it clear that there will be no changes in PS5 prices in the United States. However, you would have to pay more to get a PS5 if you reside in Canada or Mexico.

The disc edition will now come at CAD 649.99, while the digital edition will be available for CAD 519.99. There has been an increase of CAD 20 for both versions. In Mexico, the PlayStation 5 will now retail for MXN 14,999 (disc edition) and MXN 12,499 (digital edition).

Jim Ryan says that the price increase is a “necessity” in the wake of the current global economic situation. He further adds, “our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what’s still to come.”
