Alaska Airlines Kills the Check-in Kiosk, Adds Face Scanners

Alaska Airlines is flying forward into the future. Or, trying to do something like that at least. The company announced a suite of changes, soon to be coming to airport lobbies, in a Tuesday press release. Pentagon Employees Too Horny to Follow RulesFor one, Alaska Airlines has proclaimed there will be no more check-in kiosks. Instead, customers will have to check in prior to arriving at the airport on their phones, personal computers, or with a gate agent in person. iPads that print bag tags will supplant kiosks. This…

The Smart Gun Arms Race Has Officially Begun

After decades of hype, biometrically enabled “smart” guns are officially on the market. Colorado-based Biofire Technologies this week said it released the first commercially available smart handgun which uses a fingerprint and facial recognition biometrics identity verification tool to unlock a 9mm handgun intended for home defense. The release could set off a new arms race among smart gun manufacturers eager to cash-in on a gun-addicted nation rattled by a horror-show of accidental and unnecessary firearm deaths.2807

Oura study shows covid-19 can impact your biometrics for weeks after infection

At the start of the pandemic, researchers and wearables makers rushed to see whether smartwatches and fitness trackers could detect covid-19. It’s now 2023, and while wearables show promise in detecting illnesses, there hasn’t been too much progress on the covid front. But even as most people start moving on with their lives, some wearable makers are still sifting through the data to see what can be learned from the past three years. Case in point: smart ring maker Oura just released a new study that found significant…

User forgetfulness drives preference for biometrics over passwords

More than half of consumers have had to reset their password at least once a month because they struggle to remember it, with just 6% describing this form of authentication as safe. Instead, 53% believed fingerprint scans were more secure than passwords, while 47% chose facial recognition, revealed an Entrust Cybersecurity Institute study that polled 1,450 respondents across 12 global markets. These included France, the US, and the UK, as well as 400 respondents from four Asia-Pacific cities in Singapore, Australia,…

Democrats Propose Yet Another Federal Facial Recognition Ban

Photo: Steffi Loos (Getty Images)Senate Democrats introduced new legislation Tuesday attempting to, once again, outright ban facial recognition use by federal agencies and officials, particularly law enforcement. If passed, the Facial Recognition and Biometric Technology Moratorium Act would cut the feds off from a variety of other sensitive biometrics identifiers, like voice and gait recognition, and limit federal grant funding only to states with their own “substantially similar” facial recognition or biometric

AI in Biometrics: The New Elixir of Digital Security

AI in biometrics enhances a layered biometric system by adding impenetrable layers There is nothing scarier than compromised credentials when it comes to enterprise security. Biometric technology, which is essentially human-programmed has been protecting entrepreneurial infrastructure. However, with the growing sophistication of technology and attacks, digital security systems have become vulnerable to external attacks. A layered or multimodal approach can better protect the security systems ensuring the accuracy and…

Get Used to Face Recognition in Stadiums

Just because face recognition was installed for one use case doesn't mean it won't or can't be adapted to others. In airports, Delta Airlines started using face recognition for self-service bag drops in 2017, but after spreading to ticketing and security, face scans are beginning to power personalized flight itineraries on airport screens and some in-flight services. Clear also sells services to Major League Soccer outfits like BMO Stadium, home of Los Angeles FC. Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta started a small pilot of…
