The FCC Now Says Broadband Speed Should Be at Least 100 Mbps

This small change in the definition of broadband could have a big impact

We're lucky, though. Just because I and others in my area have access to high-speed fiber and cable internet doesn't mean people in rural areas do. As of December 2022, broadband service (excluding satellite) has not been physically deployed to approximately 24 million Americans, including almost 28% of Americans in rural areas, and more than 23% of people living on Tribal land.  Also: 10 ways to speed up your internet connection todayMobile 5G coverage at minimum speeds of 35/3 Mbps isn't available to about 9% of all

Broadband internet just got redefined — again

The word “broadband” is often used in marketing materials, but its actual definition has been malleable over the years. Now, though, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a new report to indicate what should be considered “broadband.” The new standard designates 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload speeds, up from the last time they were defined in 2015. At that point, the FTC decreed 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload speeds. That’s how far we’ve come. You might be wondering where these numbers came from, and…

Comcast is discontinuing its its “Xfinity 10G Network” branding to describe its internet service after a National Advertising Review Board (NARB) panel found that the term could mislead consumers into thinking that Comcast’s cellular and broadband services would offer much faster speeds than current-generation networks. Comcast rivals T-Mobile and Verizon had challenged the branding with the National Advertising Division (NAD), an ad industry watchdog, which had recommended that Comcast get rid of it in October 2023.…
