Fewer Americans Are Struggling to Pay Bills, New Census Survey Finds

With eight months to go before Election Day, a deeply troubling number of Americans say they are struggling to pay their bills. But vast hardship appears to be decreasing substantially, at a good time for President Joe Biden.  As of this month, 36 percent of Americans reported having difficulty paying their usual household expenses, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau. That figure is quite high, but it’s a five-point decrease from October, when more than 41 percent of respondents reported…

Data suggests drop in homeownership, but caution urged

Colorado suffered the biggest drop in its homeownership rate of any state last year, according to counts from the U.S. Census Bureau. But economists and demographers in the state aren’t buying it. The homeownership rate, a measure of how many households own the place where they live versus renting it, was 69.7% during the fourth quarter of 2022. It moved up to 70.2% in the second quarter of 2023 before plunging to 62.7% in the fourth quarter. No other state came close to matching that 7 percentage point decline last year.…

Multigenerational households increase in Colorado due to high costs

Steve Chapman’s full house sometimes feels like it’s bursting at the seams. The 45-year-old and his wife welcomed Chapman’s mother and stepdad into their Aurora home a few years ago after his mom’s landlord sold the Loveland trailer the couple lived in, leaving them unable to afford Colorado rent on their Social Security income. “The idea was it’d be temporary to help them get going, but it’s impossible to make it here, it seems,” Chapman said of the living arrangement. Then the Chapmans’ 23-year-old daughter fell on…

Why the UK census should not be replaced with alternative sources of data

Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain Every 10 years since 1801—save for a wartime interruption in 1941—the UK government has conducted a national census of England and Wales. This is a big event. The data collated in the last survey, in 2021, is still being published, with final reports only scheduled for 2025. Yet, doubts have emerged about whether the next one—in 2031—will actually take place.

Census data shows population growth bouncing back

Population growth in Colorado accelerated this year, but it remains significantly below the pre-pandemic pace and gains fell short of what state demographers had expected. Colorado added 36,571 people to its population over the past year, bringing the total to 5,877,610 as of July 1 of this year, according to vintage estimates the U.S. Census Bureau released last week. That is up from a gain of 29,443 people in the July 1, 2022, count and 26,377 in the July 1, 2021, count. But even though population gains were 24% higher…
